1. New Member(s): None

 

2. Introduction of Guests: American Legion District 7 officers: Mike Christensen, CDR; Tim Grabin, Chaplain; Bill Held, JAG; Reese Auxiliary Representative; John Greir, Service Officer; John Maucher, Senior Vice Commander; Larry Johnson, Adjutant

 

The District 7 Officers talked about a myriad of subjects; The Pikes Peak Veterans memorial is at the U.S. Senate awaiting funding, Senators Allard and Salazar are supporting, contact State Senator Burr for support of the bill; VA Home loans have increased to $450k; El Paso County VA Service Officer office to close soon, more to follow; The women’s Veterans program in Denver is set to start soon; There is a new pension program for Vets with TBI; VA has increased the mileage rate to $0.55 per mile; The VA has announced a 2.8% pay raise for disability compensation; Members were encouraged to write to congress supporting veteran’s programs; The Colorado Veteran’s Home needs clothes for the winter and cash donations.

 

3. Committee Reports:

 

            Boys State: See email from Dave Turley (attached); Trevor Arias will be at the October meeting. The membership present voted to approve the $250 Boys State membership and scholarship fees.

 

            Scholarship: Service Officer, Nick Sooy, had no update.

 

Cruise Above the Clouds: Nick Sooy stated that seven members participated and was a good showing running the poker run card stop in victor. This is the eighth year the Post has participated. Thanks to Nick and Annette Sooy for the bar-b-que at their house after the volunteering. New member, Chuck Gardner and his wife Inge, and our Treasurer, Kirby Laughlin, participated in the Poker run. No issues.

 

Post BBQ and Campout: Date is the 27th of September at the Lost Dutchman Campground off of CR42 (Twin Rocks Rd.). 0500, move the prototype grill to the campground from Rod’s house. Serving the food begins at 1500. We have three RV slots reserved. Robert Mericle will teach fly fishing. Bring drinks and side dishes. Code for entry at the main gate was distributed. Bring breakfast if desired.

 

            Oratorical: See email from Dave Turley; Dave has contacted the Political forensics department at WPHS to get nominees.

 

            Post Home: Nick Sooy, Robby Cox, and Bruce Cummings still investigating avenues for donations and locations.

 

            Thanks from the Post Commander the posting of the colors with the VFW in Lions Park on September 9th.

 

            Other Old Business:

 

            Post Turkey Shoot: October 25th is the date. $10.00 per person participating is required to pay for supplies. Meet at 0900 at the range; Bar-b-que will be at the range; all will link up at the Ute Pass Inn for beverages afterwards. Nick Sooy is the point of contact.

 

            Veteran’s Day: Veteran’s day (Nov 11) this year falls on a Tuesday. The dinner will be held at the Crystola Inn at 1900. Robert Mericle needed to coordinate more with Darryl on events, side dishes, color guard, and POW/MIA ceremony. Dave Turley will do the advertising and coordinate with Darryl for banners.

 

            State Raffle/Gaming License Training: Date and location TBD. No new information. The State Gaming Commission owes us dates.

 

Christmas Party: The date of 16 December at 1900 was decided and approved. A location was needed. Christmas Party Committee owes location by the next meeting.

 

2009 Calendar: The 2009 calendar is now in draft form and posted to the website. Pig roast in the spring, Garage Sale TBD in the fall, Post Campout dates are still needed (late summer-early fall).

 

BBQ Smokers/Cookers: Nick Sooy has contacted a source for a cooker. $200.00 is required to refurbish the cooker. Tires are needed. Mark and Robbie have tires that will fit. Nick requested a Tax Donation form to the owner for $1600.00

 

Air Force vs. Navy Football: 04 October; 5 persons have signed up for the tailgate party; tickets are $20.00 for end zone seating; all interested persons sould meet at the Wal-Mart at 1130 for a convoy to the USAFA tailgating area. RSVP to Nick Sooy ASAP!

 

4. SERVICE OFFICER:  The Florence State Veteran’s home needs clothes. See Nick Sooy; The town stated that they did not need help with the Blood Drive (this Thursday at 1400 to 1900 at the Catholic Church

 

5. POST ADJUTANT: Membership renewals continue to trickle in. The most up-to-date membership roster was sent out to the Post Leadership the end of August; Member DD214s are still needed.

 

6. POST CHAPLAIN: Member Jim Wolff’s wife Catherine is at Evans Army Community Hospital on Fort Carson with Pneumonia. Call EACH Admissions for the Room number. Commander Fisher will send flowers and a card.

 

7. NEW BUSINESS:

 

            No new business.

 

            Correspondence: Correspondence was briefed and circulated to the membership. A post newsletter/events flyer is needed to go out via electrons and “snail mail” to inform the membership of upcoming events as participation centers around the same few members.

 

7. GOOD OF THE LEGION:

 

            Adjutant Andy Tyler retired from the Army after serving 29 years, three months and 10 days. Congratulations.

 

            Larry Johnson reminded all about getting DoD decals at his office downtown in Colorado Springs as opposed to the main gate of Fort Carson.

 

            District Commander Mike Christensen presented Commander Fischer with a Post Commander pin.

 

Commander Fischer thanked the District 7 Officers for attending the meeting.
