Meeting called to order at 1934

Finance report approved as submitted.

 

New Post Officers were installed.

 

Bill Fischer – Post 1980 Commander

Robby Cox – Sr. Vice Commander (absent – will be sworn in at the next meeting)

Kirby Laughlin – Post Treasurer

2. Introduction of Guests:

 

     Commander Bill Fischer thanked all the wives present, and absent, for their constant support of the Post and for bringing the food for the Pot Luck dinner. Thanks to Kim Cox for her support during the Pig Roast and for her organization and coordinating the setup. Thanks to Jen Manriquez and Debbie Fugatt for running and coordinating the Auctions.

 

     Teller County Service Officer, Mike Bartol, gave a brief on county services available as well as his office location in Woodland Park (740 W Hwy 24 – Old cobblestone building next to the DMV – Mon, Wed, Thurs, and sometimes on Fridays). Mike Also told all present about the VA ID card, which all veterans, regardless of service length, should have. Veterans that were honorably discharged can enroll at the VA office in Colorado Springs with a copy of their DD214. Mike assists with any VA claims as well. Commander Fischer presented Mike with an American Legion membership application and thanked him for the presentation.

 

3. Committee Reports:

 

            Boys State: Post Historian, Dave Turley, will have Treavor at the next meeting to talk about his experiences. Dave will have an update on the American Legion Oratorical program by the August meeting.

 

            Scholarship: Service Officer, Nick Sooy, had no update.

 

            Post Fun Shoot: Nick stated that the next fun shoot will be 19 July and will cost $10.00 per person. Link up will be at the Smokehouse restaurant at 0800. Dave will post the info to the website. 12 members said they would be attending.

 

            Garage Sale: It was suggested that the Post conduct a joint/combined event with the WP VFW at the Grange hall. Date TBD. The 13th or 20th of September was suggested but may conflict with the Cruise above the Clouds. A committee of Mark Manriquez, Robbie Cox, Nick Sooy, Rod Herk, Bill Fischer, Bob Mericle and Aaron Bonachea were suggested. More to follow.

 

            Veteran’s Day: more information and planning will be conducted at the next meeting. Veteran’s Day falls on a Tuesday this year.

 

            July 4th: More information from the WP Chamber of Commerce is needed about the day’s events and what is planned with the VFW and Legion. Traditionally there is a flag raising. The need for a color guard and participation in a short parade was mentioned. Dave Turley will flash an email to all members for support. Bruce Cummings asked for help with the VFW flag set up in Lion’s Park (corner of highways 24 & 67) at 0730 the morning of the 4th. Link up will be at the Grange Hall.

 

            Other Old Business:

 

Motorcycle Rally: Dave Turley will have to give an update at the next meeting (23 August).

 

4. SERVICE OFFICER: Teller Service Officer Nick Sooy had no new information. Mike Bartol, the Teller County Veteran’s Service Officer’s gave a briefing as noted above.

 

5. POST ADJUTANT: There were no new members and a few renewals came in by mail.

 

6. POST CHAPLAIN: No report.

 

7. NEW BUSINESS:

 

No unfinished events were noted.

 

            Correspondence: Correspondence was briefed and circulated to the membership.

 

7. GOOD OF THE LEGION:

 

     Nick Sooy brought up the continuance of the Ladies Auxiliary for the Post and that members were needed. Annette Sooy is the point of contact. Members were to find out if their spouses were interested and to contact Annette.

 

     Commander Fischer again thanked the spouses and other family members for attending the dinner and their support. All present agreed that the dinner was a good idea and should be continued.
