ERIC V. DICKSON AMERICAN LEGION POST #1980 May 20, 2008 Regular Meeting Minutes

Meeting called to order at 1907 Previous meeting minutes approved as written with minor changes and attendee list. Finance report will be delayed until the next meeting as funds and receipts are still being counted from the pig roast.
1. New Member(s): None
2. Introduction of Guests: Trevor Arias and his dad Leonard came to thank the Post as being the next Boy’s State awardee.
3. Committee Reports:
Boys State: Post Historian, Dave Turley, was not present. Andy will do the presentations at the WP High School Awards presentation 22 May.
Scholarship: Jr. Vice Commander Sooy stated that he will not be present to hand out the scholarship, and that Andy will do that as well at the High School.
Pig Roast: Was a big success. Funds are still being counted and it looks like we may have actually made some money. The Silent auction was much better than the live. Kim Cox did a good job. An SOP needs to be written in the future to capture lessons learned. A local wood source needs to be sought out for the next time. Left over door prizes and auction items will be donated.
Memorial Day: The local VFW Post (#6051) and Legion Post 1980 will coordinate efforts to distribute graveside flags throughout Teller County at 0900 24 May at the WP Cemetery and a more formal event at 1000 on 26 May. “Dual hatted” members will deconflict efforts with Mr. Kenney from VFW 6051. Uniform for the color guard on the 26th is ascots, black pants, white shirt and Legion cap.
Nominating Committee: Robbie Cox noted that he had contacted the present leadership to determine their desires. Marty McKenna and Nick Sooy had declined in their present positions. Robbie further reported that the following members were nominated for the below listed positions;
Bill Fisher – Post Commander Robbie Cox – Sr. Vice Commander Mark Manriquez – Jr. Vice Cdr. Andy Tyler – Post Adjutant Dave Turley – Post Historian/PAO Nick Sooy – Service Officer Rod Herk – Sgt at Arms Bob Mericle – Chaplain William Kirby – Post Treasurer
All members present voted and seconded the nominations and appointments as noted above. The membership present also voted to elect the personnel as submitted. Congratulations to the new and returning officers. All personnel will be sworn into office at the next meeting on 24 June.
Other Old Business:
Post Liability Insurance: The Post Adjutant stated that the Post was now covered with a $500k individual and $1.2mil Post liability insurance policy issued from the Tallman Insurance Company.
Motorcycle Rally: Dave Turley was not present and will have to give an update at the next meeting.
4. SERVICE OFFICER: Service Officer Marty McKenna was unable to attend the meeting. No new information was provided concerning the Mobile Home Park. Nick was given the Teller County Veteran’s Service Officer’s contact information by Bruce Cummings.
5. POST ADJUTANT: There were no new members and a few renewals came in by mail. The location of the membership’s DD214s are still in question. They are required to validate membership in the Legion.
6. POST CHAPLAIN: No report.
7. NEW BUSINESS:
Unfinished events were noted as Dave’s report on the Motorcycle rally, a fun shoot in July and that the cost would be $10.00 per person to cover costs, paying the VFW for our share of the building propane.
Correspondence: Correspondence was briefed and circulated to the membership.
7. GOOD OF THE LEGION: No issues were presented.
