1. New Member(s): Aaron Bonachea
2. Introduction of Guests: District 7 Officers Woodland Park AM Legion Baseball Coach & players Shooting Team Coach and Awardees
3. Committee Reports:
Boys State: The Commander stated that all candidates needed to be nominated by mid-may. There was one individual nominated right now and another “probable” in the works. If the Post identifies a “probable” to still submit the name to District for submission.
Scholarship: No new information from Jr. Vice Commander Sooy. Still researching advertising at WPHS to spread the word.
Garage Sale: Commander stated that a letter will go out to the membership both “analog” and digital to remind the membership to donate items in 1 to 2 weeks. Post Chaplain Robert Mericle is POC.
Pig Roast: Time is running out! The committee suggested an auction in conjunction with the Pig Roast in order to draw more funds. The motion was discussed, seconded, and passed. Members present decided on areas in Teller and adjoining counties to canvass for donated items to be auctioned. Jr. Vice Cdr Sooy informed all on the need for volunteers to pick up wooden pallets and to drop them off at the Crystola on Saturdays. Volunteers were identified and a link up location and time was coordinated.
Memorial Day: The local VFW Post (#6051) and Legion Post 1980 will coordinate efforts to distribute graveside flags throughout Teller County. More information will be forthcoming by the April meeting. “Dual hatted” members will deconflict efforts with Mr. Kenney from VFW 6051.
Other Old Business: All members agreed that the flow of information has vastly improved with the advent of 21st Century technologies. It was decided that leveraging the information superhighway, while still informing members through “snail mail”, was a good thing but to cull the membership roster to current members in order to cut bulk mailing costs. An adjusted membership roster has been sent out to the Post Leadership.
4. SERVICE OFFICER: Service Officer Marty McKenna was unable to attend the meeting. No new information was provided concerning the Mobile Home Park.
5. POST ADJUTANT: Adjutant Andy Tyler coordinated with Aaron Bonachea for his required information after the meeting. There were no new members or renewals. Annual Post Reports are due to the Colorado District by mid-May. As of the meeting, the Adjutant had not been able to get to the Post Office box due to his surgery but would check the following day and get the reports submitted. The location of the membership’s DD214s is in question. They are required to validate membership in the Legion. Old and new Post Officers will research who has the records and will turn them in to the Post Adjutant for filing.
6. NEW BUSINESS:
New Meeting Location: The Eagle Fire Lodge will start charging the Post $35.00 per meeting. All agreed that the Post should find a new meeting location. The WP Library will charge $25 per meeting. It was discussed to conduct coordination with the VFW Post 6051 to start meeting out at the Grange Hall on Highway 67 north of town. There was a motion that was seconded and passed to conduct the next month’s meeting at the Eagle Fire and to pay them the $35 if a new location could not be found. The next month’s meeting location will be sent out ASAP.
Nominating Committee: Post elections are on the horizon. New Post Officers will be nominated at the next meeting. The Nomination Committee was selected with members Hank DeNomme, Paul James, and Robby Cox.
Fun Shoot: The next fun shoot will be at 1000 19 April. Strip map is posted on the website. Link up will be at 0830 at the Smokehouse for breakfast. A $5 charge for participation is charged to participants.
District 7 Officers: Keith LeMay with Bill Marshall, Jon Maucher, plus one other whose scribbled name I couldn’t read on the attendance roster, discussed the District Convention in Canon City 1100 on 04 May sponsored by Post#13. They also discussed the Veteran’s Day Parade in Colorado Springs on 08 November and that the time has yet to be decided because of the USAFA’s football schedule for that day. The Pikes Peak Veteran’s Council meets on the last Wednesday of the month for those that are interested. Membership in the PPVC is based upon the $0.10 per number of active members of the Post. The Colorado Department Convention is currently scheduled for the last weekend in June at the Park Plaza hotel in Colorado Springs. Keith LeMay concurred with the importance of keeping DD214 copies on hand to verify Post membership if there are any questions. Problems have already arose on the east coast with posers.
Post Liability Insurance: Jr. Vice Cdr Sooy brought up the possible need to purchase liability insurance to cover the Post for its annual events in the untimely event of an accident or a law suit. The Post Adjutant was tasked to research the cost for annual coverage.
Support of the WP AM Legion Baseball Team: Coach Jim Gromelski gave a very good briefing along with the support of three of his players. They displayed the commitment, maturity, and professionalism of the team so much that support of the team was discussed. Who could not be spurred by support of “America’s Pastime” since 1925 whose former ranks include 46 Hall-of-Famers? It was decided that the Post will cover the cost of the team’s annual insurance of $160 and Registration fee of $300. The motion was passed and seconded. An anonymous member upped the ante by donating a dozen baseballs in the name of the Post for the team. Way to go!
Correspondence: Correspondence was briefed and circulated to the membership.
7. GOOD OF THE LEGION: No issues were presented.
Meeting adjourned at 2045
