ERIC V. DICKSON AMERICAN LEGION February 26, 2008 Regular Meeting Minutes

Meeting called to order at 7:10 p.m. Previous meeting minutes approved as written. Finance report not available.
By-Laws/Constitution. Constitution sent to Department of Colorado. Awaiting to for changes for By-Laws.
Boys State. The Commander stated he attended the mid-year meeting and that he had some info to passon to Dave.
Scholarship. Mountain Jackpot. N. Sooy stated that the advertisement for the paper had been sent. Will follow-up with CC. Additionally, Nick stated that he will follow-up with the High School to ensure internal publicity at the school. An electronic copy was provided to D. Turley to Post on the web page.
Financial Documents. It was decided that we would keep financial documents for a period of 7 years.
Snowmobile Trip.
Garage Sale. B. Mericle briefed that he will confirm the June 7th date. Bob mentioned a need to advertise to non-members to solicit. Need to specify “sellable” merchandise. And, further planning the end of march early April. Bob and rod will also build a new clothes rack. Stored goods at two locations, but not enough…Bob is looking for additional space…the commander volunteered his area.
Executive Meeting at Don’s. the Commander thanked don for have the executive meeting at his house. Good cold beer as well.
Pig Roast. A committee meeting was held and approx 10 people showed. The Commander briefed at the executive meeting it was brought up for a $1.00 donation for each ticket. This is not a raffle, BUT A DRAWLING. R. Cox mentioned that this is out of house; not in house. Presale of tickets. Advertise through MWR on base and inadvance. R. Cox mentioned that One concern is selling tickets in advance and not having enough food once they arrive. Do we want to sell tickets in advance, go through the line only once, etc. the Commander the ideas coming up are. Committee meeting will be 18 Mar, 6:30 pm at Crystola.
SICK CALL: Pat’s Moriano father is not doing well. Pat went back to the East coast.
Fundraiser 50/50 will begin at next meeting. A. Tyler mentioned specifics.
Membership report: Two transfers, one new member and four renewals.
New Business:
American Legion Baseball. Discussion took place as to sponsorship and to have a member or coach comin and speak to us about requirements, insurance, etc.
Bike Rally.
Memorial Day Weekend. Need to begin thinking about events. The Commander will contact the VFW.
Fort Carson is having a BDU and boot drive for the needy…serviceable uniforms. Andy, is collecting these items.
Blood drieve. Nick mentioned about the Post. Maybe the Cathoic Church.
Mobile Home Park Situation. Pete Tysdal, and Gene Betterman, Transitional Manager of the Mobile Home Park. Pete gave background about Help the Needy. Help the Needy assists those in need during “hard times.” The woodland Park areas is 410 home short for those who live in the area. Gene spoke about history of 1 year back. Then Gene took over management of the trailer park for the new owner. As of now the land has not been “turned.” It is currently in a state of limbo. They are renting space for $350 a month. Some trailers are owned; some are rented. Those owned cannot be moved not just because they are old, but also because other trailer parks won’t take them. Newer homes after 1976 can be moved. Moving expense of trailer is $5,000.00. Approx 40 family units in there. They can move 6 or 7 family members to other Park which will cost $2,000. 16 families don’t know where to go…they don’t have jobs to sustain $600 a month in rent. 6 families they are currently carrying because of employment. By state law they must give 6 mos notice…they then have 180 days to move. Thirteen have no assets at all. 85% own trailers. The commander mentioned that there are four veterans living in the Park. The owner can salvage at about $1,500 worth of salvageable material from each trailer.
The commander asked if there was any type of funderraiser. Gene replied none that he knew of. Pete mentioned that they are trying to get charities to assist. No deadline or notice has been given at this point due to it not being turn…the owners are hoping this spring that activitiy will occur.
Pete stated he wants to assist in the moving…two classrooms of kids will be moved out by the next school year????????????????
Adjutant. The Commander swore in the Post new adjutant, A. Tyler. Congratulations to Andy.
Financial Documents. K. Laughlin recommended that we maintain financial documents for 7 years. This will be put up for discussion at the next meeting.
NEW BUSINESS:
Calendar of Events. N. Sooy briefed key events in the near future (Feb-June).
Pig Roast. The Commander briefed that the executive committee recommended that the Post have the Pig Roast on May 18 at the Crystola. The Crystola is very receptive. The Commander stated that it takes “a lot of work”. Additionally, he gave an overview of events. N. Sooy recommended that there be individual Chairpersons. Through a show of hands there appeared to be enough interest to proceed. A Committee was formed. The Post nominated the following individuals to serve on the Committee: Robby, Bob, Rod, Bob, Andy, Commander, and Nick. Committee meetings to TBD (possibly on Tuesdays).
Fundraisers. A. Tyler mentioned that the Post have a membership raffle at the meeting. 50/50 (50 for Post/50 for winning member) raffle for membership attendees at the meeting. Promotes attendance and comraderie. S. Myers also mentioned. Must be present at the meeting to collect.
Robby mentioned membership reports 1919 we use to give a few dollars for individuals $50 to distict to pay for members at the home. Kirby mentioned it was normally brought up during district visitation Florence 1919 is the nursing home.
Membership Renewals. A. Tyler covered paid membership and transferred.
Correspondence. Correspondence was briefed and circulated to membership.
7. GOOD OF THE LEGION: Key Dates were mentioned. N. Sooy mentioned that we do a quarterly mailing in March for upcoming events and information.
